How To Adjust GMC Steering Wheel
Adjusting the steering wheel in your GMC vehicle is an essential step for achieving a comfortable and safe driving position. Whether you're getting into your truck for the first time or just need a quick adjustment, knowing how to properly modify your steering wheel will improve your driving experience. At Fairway GMC, we believe that your comfort behind the wheel plays a significant role in both driving pleasure and safety. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to adjust your GMC steering wheel.
1. Locate the Steering Wheel Adjustment Lever
The first step in adjusting your GMC's steering wheel is finding the adjustment lever. Most GMC models feature a lever located beneath the steering column, just to the left of the wheel. This lever controls the tilt and telescoping (in-and-out) function of the steering wheel.
Before you begin adjusting, ensure that your vehicle is in "Park" or the parking brake is engaged for safety purposes.
2. Adjust the Steering Wheel’s Height and Depth
Once you've located the adjustment lever, you can adjust the steering wheel’s position by following these steps:
- To adjust the height: Pull the lever toward you and move the steering wheel up or down to your desired height. Make sure the steering wheel is positioned in a way that doesn’t obstruct your view of the dashboard or instruments.
- To adjust the depth (in-and-out): Push the lever in the opposite direction and slide the steering wheel closer to or farther from your body. You want to set it so that your arms are comfortably bent while gripping the wheel, and your hands should rest naturally on the wheel, with your wrists just above the top of the dashboard.
Make sure the wheel is secure in place before releasing the lever.
3. Ensure a Comfortable Driving Position
The goal of adjusting the steering wheel is to enhance comfort and improve your control over the vehicle. When seated properly, your arms should be at a slight bend, with your hands comfortably gripping the wheel. The top of the steering wheel should ideally be around the level of your chest, not too high or too low. Ensure that the wheel doesn’t obstruct your view of the dashboard, especially the speedometer, and any warning lights.
4. Double-Check for Safety
After adjusting the steering wheel, it's important to check that everything is properly secured and that the wheel has not shifted out of place. Gently pull on the steering wheel to make sure it is locked in position. A loose or improperly adjusted steering wheel could be dangerous while driving.
Proper steering wheel adjustment is a simple yet crucial part of your driving setup.
